Ivar Roban Križić (*1990, Zagreb) is a musician, researcher, composer, curator, and educator based in Vienna. His work spans contemporary jazz, experimental music, and free improvisation, with a strong focus on the interplay between sound, thought, and performative practice.
He studied double bass at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and completed a Doctorate in Artistic Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. His research investigates the epistemological dimensions of free improvisation, drawing on philosophy, performance theory, and embodied cognition. He is particularly interested in how improvisation produces knowledge, how it relates to processes of listening and decision-making, and how instruments—especially the double bass—can be extended through both technological and conceptual means.
As an artist, Križić engages in collaborative and interdisciplinary formats, often combining sound with discourse, performance, and curatorial strategies. He curates the Vienna-based festival Perspectives on Improvisation, which brings together artists from across disciplines to perform and reflect on improvisational practices.
He has led workshops, given lectures, and presented his work at festivals, universities, and symposia across Europe. He is also a founding member of the WhereWhen Collective, a group exploring collective intelligence and distributed authorship in composition through dialogic rehearsal and improvisation.
